Remember your first internship, your first impressions and your first expectations? What if those were completely changed and revised today? At L’Oréal, we welcome more than 4000 interns across the globe to learn and grow by our side. In this unprecedented time, we interviewed this year’s 2020 interns to know more about their experience from the last few weeks. Onboarding, team relationships, learning curves… let’s talk about resilience and positive outcomes with our interns.
“It’s been a few weeks being a L’Oréal Summer Intern in India. Being virtual, I imagined the communication would be a problem. Turns out that “Over-communication” is the new practise at work! Everybody encouraged me to ask as many questions as I can and have been a constant support on calls and messages. Even the knowledge sessions and campaigns organised for us are quite inspiring.”
Akanksha — Sales Development Management Intern, India
“Delving into a new working environment is already challenging as it is. However, due to the pandemic, some of us only had a brief opportunity to meet our colleagues at the office or have yet to do so. My colleagues and superiors are making their best efforts to design our onboarding process as smooth as possible by increasing their availability and scheduling frequent jour-fixes to talk about work-related topics or about our well-being. Although we may be at distance physically, the current situation is drawing us closer as teams, and I am confident that we will continue to persevere.”
Max — Digital Marketing intern, Germany
“Working from home as a trade-marketing intern was certainly a challenging experience. In the last few weeks, sometimes I had the fear of not being up to the situation given the little experience gained in the office before we went back home. However, thanks to the support of my team and in particular of my tutor, I have always felt supported and connected. I learned a lot as well from being part of many webinars and meetings. It was also essential keeping in touch with my colleagues and the other interns, sometimes by replacing the post-lunch coffee break or the Friday lunch with the other interns with happy hours via Skype. Of course, I am looking forward to meet again my team in the office as soon as possible and ending my internship experience as it began.”
Francesco —Trade Marketing Intern CPD, Italy
“Meetings online has become the ‘new normal’ and somehow made us more prepared and disciplined: time and opportunity to interact are limited so we have to make the best out of it! Also, everyone at L’Oréal including my fellow interns are very warm and collaborative, and the best part is that we have each other’s backs always. We do realise that we aren’t stuck at home, but are safe at home. For us, it’s not just working at L’Oréal, but personal development as well.”
Shivangi — Summer Intern, India
“I started my internship at L’Oréal right away in smart-working, and it was a great challenge! I met my team virtually, and started my onboarding between meetings, calls and digital learning sessions in order to be aligned with all the actions to do! The support of my team, colleagues and my great energy made me spend these two months of smart working in the best possible way! I also perceived, behind my laptop screen, the strength of the L’Oréal community and the value of its culture. A fantastic world, where mutual support has never been lacking! I cannot wait to meet in person all the people I have met in these virtual months and continue my fantastic internship with the determination and the desire to do that my team and I have never lost despite this difficult situation!”
Giulietta — HR Learning and Transformation Intern, Italy
“For my team and me, it was hard to work from home at the beginning because, without the lab, we are limited to experiment. However, in the end, we took the best from this difficult situation. We could stay in contact and motivate each other every day via digital meetings. I also enjoyed the events organized by the Talent Acquisition teams for all interns and apprentices, like the Internpreneurs coffee. In my opinion, constant communication and support is key to keep ourselves mentally healthy & productive”.
Enmanuel — Haircare & Styling development intern, France
“I started working at L’Oréal just a month before we went into lockdown. Although I wasn’t in the office for very long I still feel that I am a massive part of my team. We have weekly team catch-ups and I have daily conversations with my line manager. L’Oréal has been incredible at coordinating online training which has enabled me to increase my skill set and learn so much over such a short period of time. Additionally, my team have weekly Virtual Quizzes outside of working hours which are great and they allow me to get to know my colleagues outside of the work environment. My team always make an effort to include me and ask for my opinions on a variety of different projects which shows that I am a valued member of the team”.
Niamh — Emerging Talent Intern, UK
“My first ever corporate stint turned out to be very different than I expected. The team at L’Oréal was proactive in ensuring this does not make the experience any less enriching. Although I have never met my team in person, they have blended me in so naturally that it feels like I have been a part since forever! I am thankful to everyone at L’Oréal for this beautiful journey possible, the agility of the organization has been really commendable.”
Aaruni — Summer intern, India
“Starting an Internship from home has been interesting especially since I am in my childhood home in Florida and not in New Jersey where I live. The HR and IT department were able to accommodate me and send all the equipment needed. The TA team has been incredibly supportive and have made themselves readily available to help ensure my learning experience is still prioritized. My manager has done a great job guiding me through a remote onboarding, staying connected, and communicating in detail. I have been able to meet with everyone on the TA team and our HR partners via meet & greet video calls and coffee chats.”
Shanel — HR associate intern for Talent Acquisition, USA
“It took a couple of days to settle in but post that it has been a fun experience till date.”
Siddharth — E-Commerce Intern for Consumer Products Division, India
